I happen to have the TCL Flip Go. Amusingly, it seems that TCL's support team is in the dark on these phones as they tried to tell me they don't have the capability for Dev Mode or USB debugging - even after sending a picture of both enabled.

Nice. I may be able to make a firmware backup. please email me biden2020prez@gmail.com. Thanks!
Biden2020prez Sent a quick email
I have the tracfone(total wireless) model. I'm using Linux tho so i cant seem to get the mediatek thing to work even in wine.
Has anyone get around the restrictions of this phone?
has there been any progress getting apps on this phone? the guy who was supposed to have a filter for it told me it's not ready yet..... i've successfully suspended the browser etc... btw i've had quite a number of times that the phone freezes up on me and needs to be restarted by holding down the power key for 10 seconds. has anyone else had this problem? also i noticed that assisted dialing has it's moods....
NEC I haven't had that freezing problem. And we're kind of stuck in terms of apps.
ZTEGuy okay.
I've managed to capture the flip phone firmware link via ADB while running the software update and uploaded the file on Google Drive, so here's the link: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1oQXsI5SG27rUPBOi-Hy18KDmmjdCvcYA/view?usp=sharing (Google Drive link no longer available)
This includes the "boot.img" file.
And i've managed to load magisk onto the flip phone via a patched boot.img i used from the firmware using the Magisk app on my Fire tablet and fastboot. But i also can't seem to get magisk app to work on this phone.
EnriqueMcquade Can you create an update zip to install the Magisk app and sign it with the cert included in the zip you shared? adb reboot sideload gets into sideload mode
darth It will impossible for me to do that but i'll try
EnriqueMcquade It's too complicated for me, and possibly the recovery is going to think the zip is not verified.
EnriqueMcquade Thanks! Do you mind giving instructions ( I want to try on a Cricket and T-Mobile version)
the t408dl can be filtered at TAG
Biden2020prez
at which location?
hk675 South Florida told me that Purifone made a filter for the T408dl, which is available, and they are coming out with one for the 4058 phones soon. I am assuming it is available at most locations.
I will have to check with my local TAG location. But I'm assuming that means you can flash custom firmware on this phone, maybe someone on the forum can make a fully kosher option like the Sonim XP5
@ZTEGuy#7208 You can, and people are working on it.
The person I spoke to said he is pretty sure it's a custom firmware (although some filters aren't btw - like lg classic)
Biden2020prez I asked them, and they told me that
ZTEGuy That's why he said he is pretty sure it's a custom firmware
Biden2020prez custom forum
You mean firmware, right?
ZTEGuy whoops, fixed
hey peeps,
picked this device up at someones request
a few of us are working on a custom recovery for it, and unblocking app installs. hope to have some updates soon
EnriqueMcquade What you did is great, the only problem is that the firmware update that you got only contains patch files instead of the actual filesystem for the system partition which is what we need to modify to remove or install applications.
Thanks for trying though.
Apps4Flip-Admin I know but problem is, the actual firmware of this flip phone and it's variants including TCL Flip Go and TCL Classic are nowhere to be found on the internet, I tried to search for the firmware using the firmware version, and no results. The only way we could get the firm ware is either contact TCL or someone that could dump the firmware of this phone using JTAG pins.
lgexalter1 yes u can pull firmware with custom recovery
lgexalter1 Are you going to use TWRP or Clockwork Mod for the custom recovery?
lgexalter1 But if you want to use TWRP for this phone, you need to implement some sort of navigation using the phone's dpad because TWRP is designed for devices with touchscreens.
lgexalter1 I have been working with @darth @sdmde @yeti on this phone. We managed to flash a patched boot img, but magisk didn't install, like EnriqueMcquade . A few people are working on a few things, and I think we'll be able to crack this phone. There is a way to patch the tmobile and cricket variants' firrmwares through meta mode, but I couldn't do it with any publicly available technologies (with mtk meta there are a few partitions that flash, but not most). I have high hopes though.
lgexalter1 I'm curious if this would work. the regular magisk build bricks android 11 phones, (which is fine b/c there's a workaround), but I'm curious how this script works. Anyway, I won't be able to try.
lgexalter1 Did you use the main channel or canary channel?
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/problem-installing-magisk-android-11.4175233/
https://www.droidwin.com/fix-magisk-patched-boot-img-issues-android-11/
lgexalter1 Same way as EnriqueMcquade just use a device with a very similar chipset and kernel (like the at&t calypso)
can you put a tracfone plan on a walmart family mobile phone (since walmart family mobile is owned by tracfone)?
Biden2020prez There is a way to patch the tmobile and cricket variants' firrmwares through meta mode
he said it is easier to add apps on those variants, so maybe he did that
And also, I found source code for the 4058W variant which is available on sourceforge. https://sourceforge.net/projects/alcatel/files/OT_4058W_20220526.tar.xz/download
Yes.
If a modified boot.img runs, sounds like we're at the home stretch. If adb_debug.prop exist, it should be loaded if we create /force_debuggable in the boot.img ramdisk. This should run adb as root and get us started. Or maybe even just changing cmdline from "buildvariant=user" to "buildvariant=eng"
I couldn't find a new T408DL locally so I purchased online last night. Will be a few days for me to join back in the fun.
